Course Description

The purpose of this interactive online course is to teach the basic principles of operation of pad-mounted transformers and switchgear, the types of equipment that are in common use, and how they are connected. The course also presents the basic principles of pad-mounted transformer and switchgear inspection and troubleshooting and shows an example of how to detect a problem with one leg of a three-phase transformer. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to state how pad-mounted transformers and switchgear are used and to describe how they are connected. They should be able to recognize and identify commonly used types of pad-mounted transformers and switchgear. They should also be able to inspect pad-mounted transformers and switchgear, and they should be able to detect a problem with one leg of a three-phase transformer.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Describe the characteristics, components, and general operation of a pad-mounted transformer
Describe an installation procedure for a three-phase pad-mounted transformer
Describe various problems that might be encountered when troubleshooting a three-phase pad-mounted transformer
Explain how the troubleshooting process can be used to isolate the cause of a problem in a three-phase, pad-mounted transformer
Describe the characteristics and components of pad-mounted switchgear
Explain how the configuration of pad-mounted switchgear allows you to sectionalize and isolate portions of the system during repair or maintenance

Biography

Todd Neville worked for Jefferson Energy Cooperative in Georgia for 24 years. His career began as a groundman and worked up to line crew supervisor. After many years in the field, Todd was ready to begin sharing his knowledge and experiences with others. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Management at Troy University. Mr. Neville is now a Senior Product Specialist for Underground Cable Accessories at Hubbell Power Systems.
